Downer and Lonely Life are some of my favorite groups right now. Downer is the main band, and Lonely Life is a side project of one of the members of Downer. There is something about this music that I just absolutely fall in love. Maybe it the vocals, maybe the lyrics, maybe just every goddamn thing about both of these albums. I can't find a single flaw in these in my book. If you don't get this you are seriously missing out on something. -Jacob Rice

4. Violet
Pop punk from Boston. These dudes blend pop punk and emo very well. This album tops their last release which was released around late last year which I posted a review about, definitely check that review out and the album. Anyways I loved that album, and i'm loving this one even more. Much more of a mature sound this time around, I feel like they combined a lot more emo sound into this one as well but still keeping a modern pop punk sound. Great lyrics, great feeling and passion. I will definitely have this thing on replay for a while. Also, great acoustic track at the end of this EP Check this one out for sure. -Jacob Rice

Flawless - Winter Tour Tape
Year: 2012
Tracklist:
1. Eagleton
2. Take My Pride
These guys are probably the best local band from Springfield Missouri honestly. Extremely well written and thought out music. These two new songs trump over Something I'll Never Miss without even trying. So much more emotion, and you can feel how much they put into writing these songs. For Fans of Title Fight, Basement, and Merit. Its kind of hard to compare these guys to a lot of bands. They don't really sound identical to any of those. But don't sleep on this, also these guys are going on tour soon. Catch them in your town soon, here is the tour listing. Please check this out. -Jacob Rice

Aurora - Fairweather
I hadn't heard of these guys before today and apparently they are fairly new! Tim from the band submitted their music to me just recently and I gave the album a full listen. Its a well mixed blend of Pop Punk and Emo. Drawing sounds from bands such as Man Overboard, Title Fight, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Transit. The last 3 more towards the instrumental sound of this album.
The demo starts off strong with The North Star Narratives, melodic guitars chiming in as said before in the manner of an emo song but with a pop punk drum beat, and most definite pop punk vocal style. Its very energetic. This is one of the more emo tracks on this for sure, which I really enjoy. On the lyrical side you get a story of a broken relationship or just being lost in general it seems which is always relatable. With lyrics like "and then you put up your guard just to keep me safe, and then you always criticize me for all my stupid mistakes, and to think I wasn't always there but close to the end. I turned around and realized what I was truly missing."
My favorite song on this is Little Traps. This is the strongest track on the release in my opinion. There is so much emotion in his voice already at the very beginning speaking of seeing through how much of a liar someone is and how translucent they are. Once again the instrumental part of this very much leaning on the side of emo. This song is just really catchy. I love it. You can't help but get it stuck in your head and tap your foot along with the drum part and nod your head. There is honestly a lot of emotion in this release, which is how it should be. You should put your everything into every song and I can tell these dudes are doing it in this short demo.
I only had one tiny complaint with this album. There were a few parts that used Auto-Tune and i'm not too much of a fan of that at all. Other than that this demo is absolutely awesome! I recommend it for anyone who digs pop punk and even people who are into emo could see and enjoy a lot of this album. These guys are currently working on their full length so I am looking forward to hearing that one!

Scuzbot - Scuzbot Review

Scuzbot are a pop punk band from Pennsylvania and are very hardworking in the DIY scene there and spread across the scenes to Delaware and New Jersey for about 2 years! They released their EP Shapes and Trends about a year ago (Get that here)
The album starts out with the song "People Hate Fun" which honestly starts out the album perfect! It really sets the mood for the rest of the album. With happy upbeat sounding instruments accompanied by not so positive and happy lyrics this stuff is really growing on me! I'm usually not the type who is into pop punk like this. The first song really is sending me some New Found Glory vibes. Especially at the best part in this song where it slows down and the lyrics are "So go have a bad time with all your coffee drinking friends, I know your night was shitty. I hope that mine never ends" That part is just the defining point of this song to me.
I honestly wasn't expecting some of the lyrical work these dudes have to come from them just by hearing what the actual music sounds like. Honestly the lyrics sound like they are coming from an emo record like its Algernon Cadwallader or something. Besides there are a few more silly lyrics that come from these dudes but at the same time its kind of refreshing to not be super serious all the time. Some of my favorite lyrics on this thing come from Say It Don't Spray It, Washed Up, Perfect, and Giving Up On You. As well as those are my favorite songs!
The instrumentation on this thing is pretty straight forward but why not? Because these dudes pull it off so well! I'm honestly surprised these guys aren't bigger with the sound that they put out. They can switch from super poppy stuff into some heavier break parts that there is no way you can't move to! Like I said earlier this stuff really reminds me of New Found Glory as well as some Rehasher and Less than Jake on occasion. Which I love all of those bands like no other. Then there are songs on this that remind me of more of a emo song like Send In The Clowns, that song starts out with such a fucking awesome guitar part. It sounds like it would be coming from a twinkle band or a band like Sunny Day Real Estate! Speaking of this song, this is one of the slower sadder songs on the album, I'm glad they have songs to change up the sound of the album because the first 3 songs before this one are pretty fast! Thats one thing I keep saying about this band. They are refreshing. That soft slower song continue on the album for a few more songs then picks up again.
The album ends on a half acoustic half electric track called Giving Up On You, which just as perfect as they started the album they end it just as perfect! I can't even begin to talk about how much I relate to this song. Its just about being stuck in your house while all your friends and people you love are doing things and having fun without you, but you're trying to be positive and you're trying to find what you did wrong but you're having a hard time doing it. Well thats what I got from this song, I may be wrong!
Overall this album is fucking great! It honestly moved me because a lot of these songs I can relate to with the situation i'm going through currently. The instruments as stated, fantastic. Vocals, perfect. Lyrics, love them so much. This topped their EP and my expectations of them after hearing the EP. I'm glad these dudes submitted their music to me. I am looking forward to their future endeavors.
