Casket - S/T

genre: emo

year: 2013

tracklist:
1. Shiver
2. I Had Dreams
3. Breathe
4. Nothing Left
5. Demolished Towers  (B-Side)
6. Grown/Bitter (B-Side)
7. We Were Once (B-Side)

Casket is hard to describe, in a modern age filled with twinkly emo they bring a familiar but different sound to the genre. But staying a tad bit more simple than most opting for less noodles and more power. The Vocalist is slightly monotone at time but it works and makes the occasional screams much more abrasive and sweet. All together this is a great album and worth the curiosity.

Canyons / Creeper Split

genre: Hardcore

year: 2013

tracklist:

Canyons //
1. Double Enchandra
2. Locations is Everything
3. Small Sprite No Ice
4. We Stay In The 40's
5. Because I Make It My Duty
6. Heatin' Up

Creeper//
7. Mother
8. Half Lit Life
9. Privileged
10. Drag
11. Trunk Buffet

Canyons/Creeper Split is a 11 song split, both bands play a dark style hardcore. Mixing hardcore elements with dark atmosphere and strained vocals both bands deliver that sound for those wanting more than your typical punk band. Both bands sound very similar which is a little bit disappointing because it was hard to tell one band from the other, but other than that this is a good release and worth giving a shot.

Marietta - Summer Death

genre: emo
year: 2013

tracklist:
1. ...So They Left Me At The Gas Station
2. Cinco De Mayo Shit Show
3. You've Got The Map Backwards, Matt
4. Deck Wine
5. God Bless Eric Taylor
6. Ever Is A Long Time ( Ever Is No Time At All)
7. Chase, I Hardly Know Ya
8. Fuck, Dantooine Is Big

By now you have for sure heard about the emo revival... I am not here to argue about that, I am here to tell you about "Summer Death" by Marietta. This album is beyond good. This 8 song package of twinkly emo delight is refreshing, entertaining and just fucking amazing. Each song keeps its own sound but fits together so well in the album. Clean vocals compliment the twinkly guitar and help carry this albums atmosphere through. I don't really know what else to write, just listen to the album... it is pretty self explanatory and you won't be disappointed. If you are a fan of algernon cadwallader, American Football, or any twinkly emo band listen to "Summer Death".

Flowers Taped To Pens/ Nevasca/ American Memories/ DayCare Split

genre: Screamo/Emo
year: 2013

tracklist:
1. Flowers Taped To Pens // Ghosts In My Bed
2. Flowers Taped To Pens // That Same Street
3. Nevasca // Leaving (This Northern) Town
4. Nevasca // (My) Memory (always) Fails Me
5. American Memories // Grave
6. DayCare // I don't Wanna Come Home

Alright to start this off i had my friend Alex write up Flowers Taped To Pens' side because i am in that band and it would be weird if i wrote it myself:

"Hailing from San Diego, Flowers pulls a lot of influence from a couple notable bands. Their main influence seems to be Merchant Ships/Midwest Pen Pals, in which they perfectly mix light noodling guitars with raucous screaming vocals. Though Flowers and Merchant Ships are similar, Flowers incorporates a slight amount of post-rock, giving off the impression that they are a more dreamy, spacier Merchant Ships. Also akin to Merchant Ships and Midwest Pen Pals is the clear singing that goes along with the screaming, adding an even bigger abundance of emotion to the band. Another one of their influences is probably (like most emo bands) American Football. The use of trumpet in their first song, Ghosts In My Bed, is soothing and is noticeably comparable to The Summer Ends on American Footballs self titled album. If you’re into the emo/twinkly revival scene that’s popping up, give Flowers Taped to Pens a listen. And if you’re not into the twinkly emo scene, give them a listen anyway, they’re super nice dudes." - Alex

Nevasca's side of the split starts off with " Leaving (This Northern) Town" driven by upbeat riffs and clean singing vocals, you can't help but bob your head along. Scream-y vocals are put towards the end for emphasis and work perfectly. The second and last song on their side is "(My) Memory (always) Fails Me" Which starts out with a riff reminiscent of Mineral. this song goes through a slow evolution that keeps you comfortable through the song. Nevasca definitly brings more of a 90's emo feel to their side of he split and it is greatly appreciated.

Now American Memories only have one song, but it's really all they need. AM brings a more raw straightforward screamo sound, and thats not a bad thing at all. "Grave" has a more unpolished sound in the quality of recording but it works really well and i wouldn't want it other way.

DayCare is the last on the split and has one song as well. They bring out a little bit more of the twinkly emo vibe. With a clean twangy driving the song. Everything is solid the screams are strained, the guitar is twangy, and there is group vocals... what more could you want?

I was so happy to work with all these amazing bands on this split and i hope you enjoy it.

p.s the split is available on tape through Ozona Records here

Nayru - Recollections

genre:  Screamo
year: 2013

tracklist:
1. Memories
2. Dissonant
3. Penumbra
4. illuminations
5. Our Eulogies
6. The Sky Was The Floor
7. Insomnia
8. Ghost Dance
9. Post Tenebras Lux
10. Heaven

Nayru is a screamo band from San Diego... and if you have not heard them you are missing out. Rising from the ashes of their last band Malon, Nayru hits you like a fist of anger and sadness. The screams are shrill and high pitched, the riffs are driving, and the emotion is raw. Recollections starts off right away with "Memories" which comes at you harshly before a nice melodic lull that gives you just enough time to breath before shoving you back in. It continues on switching between some emo-violence-y songs along side some more twinkly ones. One stand out track would be "Ghost Dance" with a haunting riff that slowly unfolds into a explosive climax before returning to that haunting riff you have come to love at that point. Recollections comes to a close with a treat for anyone who has been following the members through their musical history ;) Recollections by Nayru is a amazing album start to finish, So go listen to it.

year: 2013

tracklist:
1. The Last Time I Saw Elsa
2. There
3. Memorybook
4. Isolated Roads
5. Julia
6. The First Time I Saw Elsa

i was drawn in by this EP immediately, "Elsa" by Cedar Falls is a amazing journey through a dark reverbed out world full of atmosphere and looming darkness. With some tracks such as " The Last Time I Saw Elsa" and " Memorybook" displaying beautiful ambient atmosphere, and " There" and "Isolated Road" applying a more fuzzy familiar sound accompanied by dreamy vocals. This Ep is amazing and I am in Love, I can't wait to hear future releases.

Have It All - Changes

genre: Post-Hardcore
year: 2013

Tracklist:
1. Untitled
2. Circles
3. Side By Side
4. Tonight
5. Changes

Have It All is a post-hardcore band from Italy. Their newest EP "Changes" combines fimiliar hardcore elements with semi-melodic atmosphere and guitar, the vocals are more on the side of scream-y then the yell-y of Hardcore (if that makes sense). The album hits most of the notes wanted in a hardcore album with faster sections as well as slowed dow, althou i was not a fan of the "breakdown" sections in certain but to each his own. I give this band respect for their DIY recording. In the end "Changes" is a solid release, it doesn't re-invent the genre or anything, but a good release for fans of the sound.

Secoué - Shaken

genre: Screamo
year: 2013

tracklist:
1. Shaken

"Shaken" is a single from Secoué. This one song is enough to get me curious as to what else this formerly solo project. Mixing familiar screamo elements with some some interesting almost shoegazey components. Secoué  is definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

Machinist! - Birthright

Genre: Hardcore/Powerviolence
Year: 2013

Tracklist:
1. Birthright
2. They
3. Scent of Blood
4. Hood
5. Success Built On Self Hate

Machinist! have released a new EP and it is chock full of aggression, conscious lyrics, and of course very fast. Machinist! is a band from Georgia, they released an EP last year called Black List! it was one of my favorite EP's that was submitted to me that year. This time around though Machinist! is coming out balls to the wall and holding nothing back. Much more anger, more crunchy guitars, more slamming drums, and of course their politically conscious lyrics. As this album has started with the song Birthright their vocalist Jeff Hill is already throwing out lyrics like Tear down the monuments / founding fathers were frauds /
stolen flesh and continents / preaching progress as cause. The hectic feel of this album lets down absolutely none on the next track They; this track is just a flood of noise filled riffs and Jeff Hill once again firing out the lyrics They want you to believe / They want you on your knees back to back. Then ending the song with him going into a deranged ending with him repeating Obey / They. Hood is my favorite track on this EP, it begins already thrashing with Jeff barking out hate filled lyrics, the energy of this song is just very live sounding. The part near the end where the lyrics change to keep fucking / keep drinking / stop thinking / you are your enemy /, backed up with a powerful drum part and a very evil sounding guitar riff. That part is just such a good ending to this song. They wind down this album with the song Success Built On Self Hate which happens to be the longest on the album (the album is under like 6 minutes) its ends the album in the right way it should, slower, angrier, and sure as hell getting their point across with the lyrics / you're not a saint, savior, martyr, or prophet / so eat your words and pray in your closet / the tide is turning, you can't hope to stop it /
your stain will be washed away and forgotten /. This is a band you want to see live, I imagine the energy they put out on the stage is fucking awesome. Hope to see these dudes live sometime. Very solid album, check it out on November 29th on Speedowax Records.

Also check out one of the new songs on the album "Hood"

Trece - Cuervos [EP]

genre: Hardcore/ Crust
year: 2011

tracklist:
1. Cuervos
2. Una De Las Acevedo le Mamo el Toto a Tu Novia
3. Matadolor

"Cuervos" by Trece is around 4 minutes long.. and that is all you need. Trece delivers fast driving sound that will receive a warm embrace from any fan of the hardcore or crust genre. But Trece also delivers more slowed down sections to add character with a hint of thrash metal influence. Trece will feel familiar and should be a easy choice for any fan of punk/hardcore/ crust.

Bear Creek - Listen To This With Your Eyes Closed/ Lutitia

Genre: acoustic / lo-fi / experimental
Year: 2013

Tracklist:

Listen To This with your Eyes closed:
1. Yelling At Mirrors
2. X's For Eyes
3. Perfect Neighborhood
4. Migraines and Renee

Lutitia:
1. Her Ghost Staring Me In The Face
2. Paint Composer
3. Secret Spy
4. Velvet Naptime
5. Fuck Yr Friends

Alright this is a double review.. well kinda two albums by the same guy. Alright this is Bear Creek , It is the solo project of Erik Jensen and I left speechless. But i have to write a review so i will try and formulate words. I chose to do two albums because Bear Creek covers two different yet familiar sounds in each album that need to be noted. First off is "Listen To This With With You Eyes Closed" this album is mainly acoustic with slight "fuzzy" additions in the background. This album starts out with one of the saddest songs i have every heard, "Yelling at Mirrors" Literally takes my breath away. Combining a slow sad guitar riff with harmonix adding atmosphere and some amazing use of doubled vocals create a song that immediately stops my heart and takes my full attention. this album goes plays through as nice stroll through a park in the rain, "Perfect Neighborhood" takes a more upbeat turn reminiscent of the Moldy Peaches and then the album comes to  close with the dreamy  "Migraines and Renee".

Lutitia takes a different turn with the addition of electric instruments, drums, and a more full sound. The First track "Her Ghost Staring Me In The Face" starts off as a melodic treat before turning into a crescendo with full drums and a perfect transformation. This album gets progressively weirder as if you are walking deeper into  cavern with bright crystals everywhere. Going from the instrumental almost 8-bit "Paint Composer" to fuzzy crunchy organized chaos that is "Velvet Naptime" and coming to and end with an almost psychedelic note on "Fuck Yr Friends". These two albums are amazing adventures through an amazing mind, I highly recommend both of them as well as his other albums.

Tracklist:
1. That Which Was Left Beating
2. Still Restless, Still tired
3. The Slow Breaking Of Morning
4. Balcony Scene
5. The Frozen World Thawed

7. Barren Trees
8. Forgetful Eyes
9. Clear the Earth/My Exit To Hide In
10. Rust In My Lungs

Remainder is a Screamo band from Boston. Now that that is out of the way The Frozen World Thawed Is a Solid release for anyone who is a fan of the genre. This album contains everything you could want, from melodic haunting riffs to more chaotic driving songs all accompanied by harsh strained vocals that compliment it all. This release begins with a  melodic (somewhat creepy) riff that quickly escalates in a full movement that sends a chill down you spine. The album is a rollercoaster of slower haunting songs to engaging explosions of emotion, all coming to a close  with an almost 14 min perfectly appropriate send off that i won't ruin. Remainder successfully delivers a amazing album that caters to almost any fan of the genre, I highly recommend you listen to this album start to finish. ~

I Was Afraid - No Love

Genre: Emo/Shoegaze/Punk
Year: 2013

Tracklist:
1. Carve
2. Strange Ceilings
3. Room
4. Sway
5. No Love
6. Care
7. Gifted
8. Arrowhead

I Was Afraid are a band from Arkansas, and I have posted some of their releases before and in the reviews I was always saying that how I really liked the release and stuff, but this time around I Was Afraid has blown my expectations out of the water and made quite a fucking awesome album. This is one of those albums you can put on repeat and just close your eyes and zone out and just kind of feel the music and the way that it conveys its full emotion.  They play a very grunge like version of Emo on this record, which I really like because i'm a sucker for all those bands like Hum or a newer band Daylight's new album Jar. But honestly I am kind of feeling No Love a lot more, I like its personal lyrics more and I feel as if these dudes can just chock out some of the grungiest but at the same time some of the prettiest riffs. Killer drumming, you can't help but just nod your head with how these songs go. Cathartic filled vocals and lyrics, another just perfect addition to this album. My favorite song on this thing is either Sway or No Love. I blasted through this CD so fast just because I've been loving it so much. You guys should probably check this shit out, or else you're missing out. Might be my favorite submission of 2013. Thank you to all the dudes in the band for making such a great album and letting me review it. -Jacob Rice

Arkham - Old Money

Arkham are a Hardcore band from Chicago Illinois. This is their new song Old Money, and to me I feel like they have progressed their sound to a much more fluid, and emotional driven sound. Much more anger, and much more feeling. This song is chock full of melodic guitar riffs, pounding drums, and just the right vocals. They have been going since about late 2010 and filling the band out in early 2011. Since then they have release a good amount of very solid songs that you can check out on their bandcamp and download for free! Arkham is planning to release a few more singles this year and in early 2014 releasing an EP! I am excited to hear how great it is after hearing this song. Definitely check these dudes out, they are doing some cool shit. -Jacob Rice

Scream Puff Music Video

Scream Puff is a Powerviolence band from Gainesville. They play a very traditional style of Powerviolence, quick to the point and in your face. At the same time though I can tell this band isn't all "SRSCORENOSMILES" and that they can actually have some fun and probably wouldnt doubt a few humorous things thrown into these songs. This song is called The Chronicles of Procrastinatory Nocturnal Short-Term Memory Input Explosion. Try to say that once before half the song is even over. This song is off their upcoming album 1000xRepentance. The song is just a teaser of whats to come in the future. I predict much chaos, heavy, fast, and dark. So please check out this song and give these dudes a helping hand. Their new album is maybe going to be out around sometime in January and i'm looking forward to it! -Jacob Rice

Literally what you need in a Screamo album. This will be one I will be listening to all this year and into next year. -Jacob Rice

Volatile - Chin Check

Genre: Hardcore
Year: 2013

Tracklist:
1. D
2. The Matter at Hands
3. Play For Keeps

Volatile are a Hardcore band from Preston/Norwich Connecticut. Writing powerful and anger pent up Hardcore music, this album comes out as a very satisfying experience. There is one specific part of the album that sticks in my brain a bunch and its the ending to "The Matter at Hands". Its so full and I just love the lyrics to this song. This album flows from song to song very well and just flys by, great effort by this band. Can't wait to hear shit in the future from this group. -Jacob Rice

Misery - Disease Ridden

Genre: Hardcore/Powerviolence
Year: 2013

Tracklist:
1. Paranoia
2. Pale and Gray
3. Night Terror
4. Disease Ridden

Misery are a Hardcore band from Grand Rapids that just play an overall just heavy as fuck style of hardcore in the vein of bands like Harms Way, Weekend Nachos, and Nails. Meth Mouth - Bleach Bath

Genre: Powerviolence
Year: 2013

Tracklist:
1. Nothings Shocking // Falsified Convictions
2. Violent Solution
3. N//V
4. Vicarious Struggle
5. Anarchy Illusion
6. Compelled To Hate

Second release from Meth Mouth, this is their new 7"/cassette Bleach Bath. Meth Mouth is a Straight Edge Powerviolence band from Miami, I first heard them about late April of this year with their first Demo. This 7" expands on the chaos and of course the noise. Just as mean and raw as the big daddies of powerviolence like Spazz, Failure Face, and Vaccine. The lyrics on this album are smart, aggressive, and the truth. This album screechs in about 5-7 minutes of feedback and pure aggression. Great release. -Jacob Rice

Kato - Buried With The Rain

Genre: Hardcore/Sludge/Post Rock
Year: 2013

Tracklist:
1. Yet His Shadow Still Looms
2. And All of the Rats Gather
3. Dust of Earth

Sometime last year I reviewed this bands first release named Came With Nothing / Left With Nothing and it was and still is one of my favorite submissions. This is their new release and let me tell you, this one is quite a project. The first song on this "Yet His Shadow Still Looms" begins with a cacophony of guitar distortion, feedback, brown note bass work, and the drummer pretty much just smashing his kit. This slowly turns into a haunting and eerie interlude part with clean guitar and finally it kicks back into the dissonance again but this time with some ear splitting vocals just to top off this wonderful track. Which honestly starts out this album as perfect as it can get and pretty much shows you what you're in for for the rest of the album.

We move on to the second track named "And All of the Rats Gather". It starts with a creepy sounding wind tunnel like noise that the guitarist is pulling off and there is a quote playing by Robert Oppenheimer which adds a certain feel of hopelessness to this track. This track also ventures into more of a hardcore feel. With riffs sounding like they came from Converge and pounding floor toms all over this track. This is a mean track.

Last but not least is the track "Dust of Earth". To me this tracks puts off a feel of just being alone all by yourself on Earth. Packed full of melodic guitar parts and standalone vocals this ends up being my favorite tracks of all on this record. This song really brings out the whole post-rock/post-metal feel. The riff near the end of this track is just fucking awesome as well by the way.

This band honestly needs more attention and doesn't get enough credit for how awesome and creative of music they are releasing. So please give this one a chance.

Dirk Frazel - Randy's Bacon

Genre: Emo
Year: 2013

Tracklist:
1. $20 1/2 8th Club
2. Stylish But Illegal
3. Plymouth Blue Horizon

I have finally made my return, after all the setbacks I am back for good i'm fairly sure and am more than ready to start posting again and continue work on the compilation! What better to post than an emo band that I fully support for my return to the blog? Dirk Frazel is a local band from my area (Springfield, MO). I saw these dudes first show (I think) a while back at a house show that Victor Villarreal (Cap'n Jazz) and these guys really killed it. Put on quite an energetic performance. Anyways, about the music, its like a wave of instrumentation. Very raw sounding, especially the vocals, but that works extremely well with the sound these dudes are putting out. Some of this stuff is even delving into some skramz with the drawn out cathartic vocals and those clean but nasty melodic guitar parts. I am very rusty on writing about music right now so sorry if my writeups are a little shitty for a bit. This band is awesome though, support them and Drunk Dad Records. DIRK -Jacob Rice

Pulled Under - Demo 2013

Year : 2013
Genre : Hardcore, 90's Metalcore

Pulled Under brings to the table a punishing blend of metal and hardcore, heavily influenced by 90's metalcore outfits such a Martyr AD and Disembodied. Coming out of the thriving DFW (Dallas-Forth Worth) scene, the band just finished touring with their North Texas brethren Sold Short

The demo opens up with a crushing, double-bass happy intro, reminiscent of Integrity's "Vocal Test." From there, the demo moves on to "Depression" which melds frantic metal riffs with chugging guitar breaks. The vocal track alternates between shrill, hellish shrieks to spoken word, creating an evil sounding contrast between the two. (think "Gone" by Disembodied.) The well-recorded vocals spill over into the final track "Born Again," where the song climaxes with layered vocals howling "If hell is real, I hope to god you burn."

In summary, Pulled Under isn't doing anything that hasn't been done before, but they do it extremely well and the incorporation of 90's metalcore influence is fantastic and formidable. I foresee this band blowing up in the near future and you should give this demo a listen.

Pariso - Consanguinity

Genre:Powerviolence/Metal

This release is mind-blowing. Truly. One of the most memorable and enigmatic bands in this style of music ive heard for a long time and this album further cements them as a genre crushing force to be reckoned with. Hard to classify and hard on your eardrums. Brilliant stuff from the lads in Pariso, and its free.

Check out these bruisers from the UK, double pedal grooves and uber tight riffing make these more than just a hardcore band. Something really cool about this release, and if their 2013 single 'Iron Fist' us anything to by, these boys are just getting started.

Next to Water Torture, this is my favorite band from Buffalo NY.  Four short, loud, and angry tracks on this demo leave you wanting more. They'll be releasing a new EP soon hopefully, which from what I've heard of it, is going to be awesome. Keep an eye on these dudes.

Nibiru - The Reinvention Of Man

Year:2012
Genre:Metal/Hardcore/Sludge

Tracklist:
1. The Reinvention Of Man
(Ch 1. Hard Focus)
(Ch 2. Pure Energy)
(Ch 3. God Mode)

A Strange yet wonderful creation from Nibiru, following up from their "Earthbreeder" Demo. One 9 minute track makes up this release, making it Incredibly hard to classify, as their are hints of so many kinds of music. but i would describe is as this: its sounds like Twitching Tongues being attacked by Basement whilst fighting off Breaking Point.
 It's really fucking good.

Bays - Immovable

Year:2011
Genre:Hardcore

1. The Jackal
2. Immovable
3. Reality Of Death
4. Foundations Hollow

I can honestly say this is one of my favourite ever hardcore records. Absolutely astonishing agression and power. Sucks so bad that these songs can no longer be heard live as bays split up to form "Survival" (Who are just as good), but they're now available for free download. give this EP a chance as Its fucking incredible. UKHC at it's finest.
